Joyce Hampton was born at Menindee Aboriginal Mission station. Her mother was Eileen Henry from Ivanhoe and her father was Edward King born at Trida. Hampton spent her childhood on the Darling River where the mission was situated. Hampton and the other children swam and fished using old car bolts for sinkers and corks from wine bottles as floats.
