Philip Dwyer studied Napoleonic history at the Sorbonne, Paris, France and lectured in Modern European History at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales.
His work Napoleon: The Path to Power 1769-1799 (2007) was joint winner of the National Biography Award in 2008.
His work Citizen Emperor: Napoleon in Power (2013) was shortlisted for the 2014 Prime Minister's Literary Award (non-fiction), for the 2015 NSW Premier's Literary Award (Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-fiction), and for the 2015 National Biography Award.
