Raised in a Menshevik household, Vladimir Kabo fought in the Battle of Berlin, was arrested as a 'cosmopolitan' in 1949, endured five years in the camps, and emerged to establish himself as the leading Soviet ethnographer on the Aboriginal Australians. Kabo and his wife, Elena (Lena) Govor (q.v.) migrated to Australia in 1990 and settled in Canberra.

Kabo authored 150 scholarly and popular works, including the books: Origin and Early History of Australian Aboriginals (Moscow, 1969), Tasmanians and the Tasmanian Problem (Moscow, 1975), and Primitive Pre-Agricultural Community (Moscow, 1986)
