Lucy Murphy was born on the riverbank at Darlington Point in Victoria. Her mother died when she was three years old and Murphy was placed in Cootamundra Girls' Home. Murphy started work as a domestic at about the age of ten. She has also worked as a cook in a hotel, in a cafe, and as a cleaner for a bank and later a school in Goodooga. In 1971, Murphy returned to Walgett.
