BiographyHistory

Weitemeyer was the son of Christian William Meton Weitemeyer and Sophia Frederikke Overbyehad. After training to be a builder and entering his father's business, he immigrated to Queensland, arriving in Bowen on 1 August 1872 aboard the "Humboldt", which had departed Hamburg 10 Apr 1872. His book Missing Friends: the adventures of a Danish immigrant (1871-1880) is based on his exploits.

Weitemeyer married Jane Borthwick Bell on 4 Jul 1878 in the Court House at St George in Queensland. The family lived in Bundaberg from 1880 to 1885; then in Brisbane from 1885 to 1887, eventually becoming the first settlers of the Montville area in 1887. Their youngest child, Henry, was the first non-Aboriginal person born on the Blackall Range in 1888. After Jane's death, in 1900 Weitemeyer married Mary Wynne. After their brief marriage ended, Weitemeyer travelled to New Zealand for a number of years.

It is unknown how long Weitemeyer was away from Australia, but he was in the Maleny district from 1913 to 1914, later moving to Herbaton on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland. He opened a joinery shop and stayed there until he suffered ill health. In late 1918 his son, Christian, took him to his residence in Bundaberg and he died about 6 months later. He was buried in the Bundaberg Cemetery in June 1919.
