Betty Stewart has lived her life in Sydney. She attended school until she left at the age of fifteen to go find work. Her main source of income was from dressmaking. After her first child started school, she became involved with the La Perouse School Holiday Centre - a place that provided activities for La Perouse students during the school holidays and later La Perouse's Out of School Hours Care program to care for children after school. This eventually led to a position as an Aboriginal Education Assistant at La Perouse Public School and later Matraville High School in Sydney.
