'Esme Johnston was a sparkling personality with a successful career in radio and journalism. She was a well educated daughter of a high-ranking public servant... She began her career on the stage in Melbourne and then started writing and editing for various newspapers. By the early 1930s she was also acting, announcing and writing for radio, first for 3AW, then for 3XY, two well known radio stations in the city. She wrote a popular Children's Hour series which was broadcast daily by 3XY, and she became a regular writer for Home Beautiful, specialising in reviewing the latest in interior design.'
