BiographyHistory

Hazel Winmar is a Noongar Elder from the wheatbelt area in Western Australia and her Aboriginal name is 'Wowra', which means that someone is throwing a spear and they jump and say Wowra! The Winmar family went to Kellerberrin when Hazel was six years old and they moved around and lived at different places because of the actions of the welfare agency at that time. The family lived on Djurin Mission with Hazel's grandparents until her grandfather died and until her grandmother was taken away, purportedly to Claremont Asylum.
