BiographyHistory

Leonard (Jack) Williams is a Noogar Elder, from the city of Albany and the Great Southern region of Western Australia, who has been involved in helping to educate young people about Noongar culture. Jack, as he is referred to, was born in the bush on the Tambellup/Gnowangerup Road. His father was Leonard Williams and his mother was Elsie May Haywood. Jack's grandparents on his mother's side were Bill Haywood and Minnie Knapp and on his father's side were Eddie Womba King George Williams and Lilly Bichell.

In 1935 his family moved to the United Aborigines mission at Gnowangerup which was run by a husband and wife team, Brother and Sister Wright. When Jack was a young man, he had the privilege of seeing the last corroboree ever performed in the Southern Region by Noongar people, some time around 1938-1939. Aboriginal people from Esperance, Ravensthorpe, Kalgoorlie and Geraldton and from groups such as Noongars, Wongi, Yamajis and Pitinjarra people gathered together for this ceremony.

Leonard (Jack) Williams is the brother of Averil Dean.
