BiographyHistory

Marguerite de Navarre, otherwise known as Marguerite of Angouleme or Margaret of Navarre, was the queen consort of King Henry II of Navarre. As a patron of humanists and reformers, and an author, she was an outstanding figure of the French Renaissance. Samuel Putnam called her 'the First Modern Woman'. An edition of her book The Heptameron, or, Tales and Novels of Margaret, Queen of Navarre was banned in Australia in 1927.
