BiographyHistory

Hussein Tahiri deserted from the Iranian military during the Iran-Iraq war and fled to Turkey. After thirteen months in Turkey he and his wife were granted refugee status by Australia and they arrived in Melbourne in 1989. There Tahiri started learning English and in 1991 he began a university Arts degree, which he finished with Honours in 1995. He now has a PhD from the University of Melbourne, with his thesis anaylsing 'how the tribal structure of Kurdish society has prevented the formation of a Kurdish state' (Fire, Snow and Honey, p. 628).
