BiographyHistory

Waleed Bamirny grew up in Baghdad. He studied maths and science at university, then, at the time of the Gulf War, he was conscripted into the Iraqi army, from which he deserted. Following the Gulf War he worked for a time as an interpreter for the US army, and later as a field officer for Care Australia. Because of this work, he began to fear for his life and eventually was able to leave Iraq for Turkey and then Australia. [Source: Fire, Snow and Honey, pp. 357-371]
