Sally Bin Demin grew up in Broome during the 1940's and 1950's. Her mother was a member of the stolen generation who spent over fifty years in a relationship with a Malay man. Denim herself acknowledges she is also of Asian and Aboriginal ancestry and identifies with other ethnic groups. She lived at Beagle Bay, then at Holy Child Orphanage with her sister, Pearl, while her mother worked in various houses in Broome. At age fourteen she went to work at the Streeter and Male general store for the next twenty one years.
Demin worked at Nulungu which later became St. Mary's College as a highly regarded teaching assistant for 25 years. While working in the Art Department Sally learnt about art by listening to Sr Helena OLM as she taught the students. After eight years in Adult Art Education at the Jarndu Uawuru Women's Resource Centre Sally retired to concentrate on her silk painting at home. She has also been named as NAIDOC Aboriginal Artist of the Year for her striking silk paintings
