BiographyHistory

Charles Mingus was an influential African-American jazz bassist, composer, bandleader and occasional pianist. Based in New York, he also played an active role in challenging racial injustice. His autobiography Beneath the Underdog: His World as Composed by Mingus presents an account of his early career as a pimp. The book was banned in Australia in 1972.
