BiographyHistory

Barbara Cummings was born in Darwin and grew up in the Retta Dixon Home. In 1925, Barbara's grandmother Ruby Kunyi and her mother were taken to Kahlin in the Northern Territory by police. After her mother returned from South Australia in 1946 she met Barbara's father who was a soldier named Mervyn Phillips. Barbara Cummings received the Aboriginal of the Year Award in 1991 and was the author/compiler of the book Take This Child in 1990. Barbara Cummings participated in the establishment of Karu, the Aboriginal and Islander Child Care Agency in Darwin.
