BiographyHistory

Jones was an African-American poet, writer and political activist. He established 'Totem Press' in 1958 and published works by marginal U.S. writers of the time, including Kerouac and Ginsburg. In 1968 he changed his name to Amiri Baraka to reflect his Muslim beliefs. His book The System of Dante's Hell was banned in Australia in 1967. Jones is included in AustLit because his work was banned or restricted in Australia by the federal censor.
