Essential Viewing was established as a development company in 2004 by Rosemary Blight, Ben Grant, Kylie du Fresne and Cass O'Connor (RB Films) and Chris Hilton, Ian Collie and Sonja Armstrong (CIS and Associates). RB Films was re-branded Essential Viewing in 2004 and in 2007 it produced the highly successful children's television drama series Lockie Leonard (q.v.). In 2008 the company was again re-branded, this time as Goalpost Pictures (possibly due to the similarity in name with several other Australian and UK-based media organisations).
Essential Viewing/Goalpost Pictures has been involved in a number of productions which have been sold internationally and screened at key international festivals including Berlin, Sundance, Locarno and Toronto. It has also been the recipient of Rose d'Or, BAFTA, AFI, Crystal Bear and Logie awards and nominations for several of its film and television programs. Among the company's credits are the 2007 Sundance Film Festival hit Clubland, The Eternity Man, a second series of Lockie Leonard, Scorched, Closed for Winter and the Australian/French co-production The Tree.
