Catling was born in London and was educated in London and the U.S. He wrote twelve novels, three volumes of non-fiction and nine books for children. In addition to writing novels, Catling worked in the Royal Canadian Air Force and he was also employed as a journalist. He retired in Cork. Two of his novels were banned in Australia.
