Associate Professor Penny Russell has worked at The University of Sydney. Her research interests include: 'status and manners in colonial Australia; travel, gender and imperialism in nineteenth-century Australia and Britain [and] 'biography, life writing, subjectivity'.
Russell's Savage or Civilised?: Manners in Colonial Australia (2010) was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards, Best History Book Award; the New South Wales Premier's History Awards, Australian History Prize; the Ernest Scott Prize and the CAL Waverley Literary Award for Literature. It was also a co-winner of the 2011 Alex Buzo Shortlist Prize.
In 2015 Penny Russel - along with John Gascoigne - was awarded the Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser chair of Australian studies at Harvard
