BiographyHistory

Nicolas Restif de la Bretonne's prolific output in eighteenth-century France connected his detailed realism and belief in social reform with an interest in the underground obscene publications of the Enlightenment. He was the author of over 250 novels, and is sometimes credited with bringing the word 'pornographe' into modern usage from its roots in antiquity. His autobiography was banned in Australia in 1930. He is included in AustLit because this work appears in the Banned in Australia subset.
