Bridges grew up in England and was educated at Marlborough College. He went to Florida when he was eighteen to work on an orange plantation but returned to England virtually penniless.
Bridges then became a freelance writer and was published in magazines and newspapers, his first successful serial being 'Paddy Leary's Schooldays', the story of an Australian boy at an English public school. He later wrote sequels about the same characters, and also published many science-fiction and adventure books for children, as well as works in other genres for adults.
Bridges is best known for Wings of Adventure, which was issued during the 1950s. Bridges also wrote science fiction and adventure stories for boys under the pseudonym 'Christopher Beck'. As far as is known, Bridges did not visit Australia.
