BiographyHistory

James Service 'arrived Melbourne 1853 as representative of his Glasgow employer and in 1854 established James Service & Co., merchants and importers, with James Ormond as partner'. Service was one of the founders of the Commercial Bank, a land reformer and an active federationist. He was first elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1857 and served in a number of ministerial roles, including Premier, for various periods from the 1860s to the 1880s.
