Matt Coyle grew up in Canberra and then studied painting at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. While at university Coyle contributed a weekly comic, titled Campus Security, to Honi Soit. He returned to Canberra after two years and began work on his first graphic novel, Registry of Death (1996). Coyle later re-located to Hobart, Tasmania.
