BiographyHistory

Faith Thomas was born in the Nepabunna Aboriginal mission in South Australia in 1933. Her mother, Ivy, was a traditional Adnyamathana woman from the Flinders Ranges and her father a German migrant. Under pressure Faith's mother placed her in Colebrook Children's Home in Quorn.

Thomas trained as a midwife at Queen Victoria Hospital in Adelaide, registering in 1957 and began working at Point McLeay Aboriginal Reserve (now Ralkon) in 1958.

In 1958, Faith Thomas was the first Indigenous person to be selected to play cricket for her country and the first Indigenous woman to be selected to play any sport for Australia.

She has worked widely in the area of Aboriginal heath and community services in South Australia.
