Academic, journalist, and author of long-form non-fiction creative writing. Born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand, he has also lived in Victoria and Queensland.
Among his works are plays and short non-fiction, as well as the book Moron to Moron, about mountain-biking across northern Mongolia, from a small town called Mörön to a smaller town also called Mörön.
In 2015, Penguin published The Coal Face, a short Penguin Special (132p.) on the Hazelwood mine fire, which burnt out of control for 45 days in February 2014. In 2019, he released Hazelwood, a long-form account of the same fire: it was longlisted for the 2020 Walkley Book Award, highly commended for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award, and shortlisted for a Ned Kelly Award (true crime).
In 2023, he was awarded the 2023 Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) and the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) Te Puni Kaituhi O Aotearoa (PEN NZ Inc) Writers’ Award, for his project on doomsday preppers.
