'Kathleen Cochrane became interested in the cause of Aboriginal people in the 1920s at the knee of her grandfather, Edward Armitage, who was adopted as a member of the Wide Bay Tribe in the Maryborough region. Known affectionately as 'the two Kathies', Cochrane and Kath Walker (as
Oodgeroo was known for most of her life), met as young women in the 1950s, fledgling days of the Aboriginal rights movement in Queensland. They became lifelong friends. Cochrane has also published in the area of special education and before her retirement in 1988 she worked as Senior Tutor at the Schonell Education Research Centre, The University of Queensland.'
