Poh S. Lim was born and educated in Malaysia. After gaining a B.A. (Hons.) degree from the University of Malaysia in 1968 she worked as a high school teacher and later returned to study to gain teaching qualifications. Poh travelled in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Europe, and North America before settling in Australia. In 1991 she completed a M. Comm. (MIS) at the University of New South Wales.
Poh has worked as a teacher, a secretary, and in health and business-related fields.
