Stuart 'Tuey' Hamilton Hume, great-grandson of the explorer Hamilton Hume's brother, was a farmer and grazier, but also a dedicated fisherman and poet. He was born and grew up in the Goulburn area, but after his marriage in 1936 he moved to Kempsey on the Macleay River, where he had considerable problems due to the regular floods in the area. In 1951 he returned to to the Southern Tablelands to live within easy reach of his favourite trout streams until his death in 1985.
Hume's verse and prose, mostly focussing on his natural environment, were published in the Bulletin and other periodicals and newspapers. Hume's daughter Jennifer Hume Macdougall compiled and edited a selection of his work written between 1940 and 1955, He Heard the River Calling (1996).
