Charles G. E. Platts was probably South Australia's first bookseller. He arrived in Adelaide from London in 1839 and in 1840 opened a circulating library and bookshop in Gillies Arcade. In 1842 he moved to Hindley Street, where he sold music, books and stationery as 'The Auction Mart'.
Platts was the publisher of a range of periodicals and books in Adelaide in the 1850s and 60s. He died in 1871.
