Originally science-fiction only, Lightspeed merged with sister publication Fantasy Magazine in 2012, and subsequently published both fantasy and science-fiction works.

Fantasy Magazine is a Speculative Fiction magazine online. Fantasy Magazine was launched in 2005 by Sean Wallace as a print edition at World Fantasy Convention in Madison, Wisconsin. Six more issues were printed and in October of 2007, Fantasy Magazine began publishing solely online. As of January 2012, Fantasy merged into Lightspeed.Fantasy published a single remaining solo issue, 'People of Colo(u)r Destroy Fantasy!' in 2016.
The periodical was revived in November 2020, and continued numbering from the last 2016 edition. It closed again in October 2023.
