BiographyHistory

Yorky Billy was an Aboriginal buffalo shooter and crocodile hunter whose father was an Englishman, William Alderson (known as Yorky Mick), from Yorkshire, England, and whose mother was a Ambugaria woman from around Nourlangie. who died when Yorky Billy was three years old. Yorky Billy accompanied his father as a fettler on the railways and droving in the VRD. They later returned to the Kakadu area and lived by prospecting, crocodile shooting and working for buffalo hunters. (Source: NT Place Names Register website)
