'Born in Cleveland-street, on the city side of Surry Hills, in January, 1862, I had an unadventurous boyhood until my father died when I had barely reached my 'teens. At 12 I was a fully-fledged oflice-boy in the office of Gedye and Mccrea, Customs agents. There I gained my first knowledge of ships and sailormen, and the longing for the sea was born.'
So begins Horning's account of his first sea voyage, when he was shipmates with Joseph Conrad.
