'This collection of diary entries and letters written by Methodist missionary Joan Ellemor from northern Australia to her family in Melbourne betwen 1940 and 1961 is a significant contribution especially to Northern Territory history. Her descriptions of the effect of war on northern Australia, her participation in the dramatic evacuation of missionary women and children from East Arnhem Land , the growing awareness of indigenous rights and the church's rethinking of its missionary purpose, emerge from this record of the day to day experiences.'
