An adaptation by Max Afford of John Masefield's play The Faithful (first produced and published in 1915), which recounts the story of the 47 Ronin (a story that is both an historical event from eighteenth-century Japan and a legend).

A ronin is a samurai left masterless by the death or fall of his master or by the loss of his master's favour. The legend of the 47 Ronin follows the story of forty-seven masterless samurai successfully seeking revenge on the court official who caused their master's fall, before committing ritual suicide (seppuku).
