Shallows was Tim Winton's first Miles Franklin Award, and Winton rose to stardom overnight in Australian literacy circles. The fiction focuses on the whaling chaos in Western Australia and captures influences from the outside world on the whaling industry, and displays the whaling towns people's opinions on whale - killing. The ecological theme is vividly shown through collages of narration by joining together the, news, slogans and scientific and technical literature, Through the description of fierce conflicts between whale killers and whale protectors, Shallows is outstanding as a novel featuring environmental protection.
