The German raider that is the villain of this story is the SMS Emden, destroyed by the Australian ship HMS Sydney at the Battle of Cocos on 9 November 1914; the story ends with a reminder about the Emden's fate. The story also notes the damage that the Emden's successes would have on enlistment in Australia, making this the first truly nationalistic of Parsons's war stories.
The fate of the SMS Emden became a popular topic for Australian writers throughout 1915, including two films.
