Peter Pinney (1922-92) was a Brisbane-based travel writer who wrote over 20 novels as well as multiple scripts for television and film. Having claimed to have travelled across 180 nations in his lifetime (Pekov), Pinney was a character who distrusted authority and travelled through dangerous countries without visas, and with nothing but a rucksack and the clothes on his back. It's certainly appropriate to say that he embodied an "Australianess" that's certainly worth recognising and remembering.
This article will unpack this underappreciated Australian icon by looking at his formative years, his brief stint in the army, before looking at his prolific travels, the significant people in his life and finally his later years.
