BiographyHistory

Maurice Smith was a printer and newspaper proprietor/publisher in Van Diemens' Land (Tasmania) in the 1830s. Smith was the proprietor and publisher of the Trumpeter from 2 February to 3 April 1838 and the Tasmanian and Austral-Asiatic Review from 2 February to 30 March 1838. The short time of his involvement in both these newspapers may be explained by advertisements in the press from the beginning of May 1838 '[i]n the matter of the Insolvency of Maurice Smith'.

The advertisements give Smith's address as 'late of No. 5 Collins street, Hobart Town, in the Island of Van Diemen's Land' and his occupation as 'Printer and Newspaper Proprietor.'
