Notes

  • Epigraph: 'The Australian Women's National League has resolved to embark on a recruiting campaign - News item.'
  • During World War I, women played a major role in the various recruiting campaigns. The Australian Women's National League was one of the many women's organisations involved in recruiting. This Melbourne Truth poem and accompanying sketch appeared in the months before the Gallipoli campaign, when newspaper humorists and satirists were still able to present the war in a lighter vein. Following the landing at Gallipoli, when the reality of war started to hit home and the numbers of new recruits fell, it is doubtful that the authorities would have allowed a key recruiting organisation such as the Australian Women's National League to be lampooned in the manner that we see here.
