AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This is an extract from an international poem of eight stanzas entitled 'The Voice of Freedom'.

Notes

  • The 'Voice of Freedom' was possibly first published in the English periodical the New Monthly Magazine in January 1828. The extract published in the Cornwall Chronicle forms part of a letter by 'Americanus' who writes '... the struggle so likely to take place between the Canadians and the Mother Country [previous issues of the Cornwall Chronicle newspaper had published columns on this subject] ... occasions me to beg you will favor me with the insertion of the following verses ... from the pen of Thomas Campbell, Esq.'

AustLit has not yet established whether Thomas Campbell is the author of the poem. The poem is attributed to J. G. G. in the New Monthly Magazine. Thomas Campbell was the editor of the New Monthly Magazine at the time.
