Written especially for actress Julia Matthews, B. L. Farjeon's Faust interweaves the legend of Mephistopheles with Gounad's opera (1859).

Adapted expressly by Hall and St Clare and localised by Fergus Hume from B. L. Farjeon's Faust burlesque (first produced at the Princess Theatre, Dunedin in 1865).
