BiographyHistory

Actor, playwright and theatre manager.

Paul Meritt made his professional acting debut at the Theatre Royal, London, in 1861 and began his writing career soemtime around 1870. Between 1871 and 1874 he wrote melodramas for the Grecian Theatre, and later collaborated with a number of other leading English playwrights, including August Harris, Tom Taylor, Henry Spry, and Henry Pettitt. Arguably the greatest success of his career was The New Babylon (1878). During the early 1880s Meritt partnered George Conquest at the Surrey Theatre, which also led to several jointly written plays.
