BiographyHistory

Samuel Ramsden arrived in Melbourne in 1844 on board the Wallace. He worked first as a stonemason before turning to flour milling in Carlton. In about 1867, Ramsden purchased the late Thomas Kenny's paper-making plant and took up a government grant to establish a paper mill on the banks of the Yarra River near Princes Bridge. The mill commenced operation in 1868.
