Notes

  • Although advertised as having been adapted specially for the Mastodon Star Minstrels by J. P. Hydes, this second production of H.M.S. Pin-a-4 (In Black) for the year 1882 may have been influenced, if not pirated, from Bent and Bachelder's Anglo-American Christy's Minstrels earlier production. That version may itself have been updated and/or re-worked from W. Horace Bent's 1880 burlesque, H.M.S. Pin-a-4.
  • A later Pinafore burlesque, also titled H.M.S. Pinafore (In Black), was staged by Frank Smith at the Alhambra Music Hall (Syd) in 1889. It was possibly founded on Bent's 1882 version (despite containing) some different characters as several members of the 1889 company had been long-time associates of Bent's - namely J. S. Porter and Beaumont Read.]
