BiographyHistory

The Haymarket Theatre, in Bourke Street, Melbourne, was established by George Coppin when he was 'forced out of the Theatre Royal' (Parsons). The theatre operated sporadically during its nine years and was completely destroyed by fire in September 1871. Following that event, the Australasian wrote that 'there is nothing to make one wish the Haymarket Theatre were not a thing of the past. There has hardly been an opinion adverse to that which has continually pronounced it the ugliest and most cheerless place of amusement in the colonies.'
