BiographyHistory

Melbourne's Theatre Royal, located on Bourke Street, was built during 1854 and 1855, and had a seating capacity of over 3,000. The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1872, and was then rebuilt by George Coppin with a seating capacity of nearly 4,000.

The theatre was operated by various managers until 1882 when it was taken over by a group that included J. C. Williamson. In 1904, Williamson had the theatre gutted and re-designed. It continued to operate until 1933 when it was sold for re-development.
