This biography of the explorer and governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) discusses Franklin's life to 1830. A sentence at the end of the account, possibly inserted by the editor of the Australian Magazine, brings Franklin's story up to date: 'In 1836 he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land, and on the 7th day of January, 1837, he landed at Hobart Town, and entered on the duties of that Government.' The writer, 'a gentleman now residing in New South Wales' (according to the editor's note below) has not yet been established by AustLit.

Biography of every description is useful and entertaining; but that of persons with whom we are connected or acquainted is far the most pleasing, The following account of the present Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land, written by a gentleman now residing in New South Wales, will, we trust, prove interesting to our readers:-

This is a different account of John Franklin's life than the biography, 'Captain Sir John Franklin, R. N.' published in the Cornwall Chronicle and the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser newspapers in June and August 1838.
