Steampunk note: Featured in an anthology of steampunk romance fiction. Set in the same world as Ryles's novel, Heart Fire, but in a different time and country. The city at the centre of the story runs on clockwork and depends on singers to keep their machines working perfectly: under the blandishments of the chaos-maker, the singers are not only rendered powerless but forced into clockwork simulacra of their own bodies.
