During 1868, meetings of the St Patrick's Christian Doctrine Confraternity Literary Improvement Society were held in St Patrick's Hall. An example is the meeting of 18 May at which the Rev. James Conway delivered a lecture on 'Ireland, its place among the nations of the earth'. The meeting was chaired by Archdeacon John McEncroe
