'The story opens with a dramatic meeting between the castaway convict woman Ginny Lockey (the once proud and beautiful Margaret Cameron) and immigrants Simon Lee Challiner and his jealous wife, Penelope. The story moves swiftly through a succession of exciting episodes. Simon and Penelope take Ginny Lockey back with them to the Swan River settlement, where her presence brings conflict and near tragedy into their lives.
'The arrival of the brutal Sergeant Loames, who had been Ginny's gaoler in Van Dieman's Land, intensifies this conflict, and reveals Simon Challiner as a man of admirable character. The lives of Simon and his wife seem bound up with the fate of Ginny Lockey, and they are the means of resolving the problem of her future.'
